They are injections that come as pre-filled syringes of hyaluronic acid or as mesotherapy products that can be electroporated (delivered into the skin with a probe without injecting). The syringes usually contain 1-2 ml of product, depending on the brand. The number of syringes needed depends on the area to be treated. Skin boosting is not just done for the face but also for the body.
The product used is mainly hyaluronic acid; however, lately, polydeoxyribonucleotide boosters obtained from salmon trout are also being used.
Since hyaluronic acid attracts water, it causes intense moisturization of the skin. It also stimulates the fibroblast cells in the skin to produce more collagen and elastin, thus making the skin more youthful and resilient. Some examples of boosters in the market are Res-ty-la-ne vital®, Volite®, Profhilo®, Nucleoskin®, Saypha Rich®, and many more.
Indications for the need of skin boosters:
The procedure is simple and takes around 45 minutes to 1 hour. The face is numbed with an anesthesia cream for a painless experience for around 30-40 min. The doctor then injects the product into the targeted areas of the skin. There may be a slight burning or pain while injecting, but this is temporary.
There may be slight lumps, which go away in a few hours. Redness of the skin may occur in some people. There may be a bruise that occurs while injecting. Bruising is temporary and goes away in 5-7 days. There is usually no other discomfort post-procedure.
Results kick in pretty soon, though they may vary from 2-7 days. They improve with time. Collagen production begins to occur in three weeks at maximum.
Ideally, each company has a protocol for injection scheduling that needs to be followed. However, the dermatologist can tweak the same and decide when to repeat the session. Usually, two treatments are done a month apart and a third after six months.
If the dermatologist is an expert injector, boosters can be injected around the eyes to brighten them, lighten dark circles and fill a small tear trough. However, in the lips, they are used to give subtle volume and hydrate them.
Following are the some side effects and complications related to skin boosters:
These side-effects can be minimized if the procedure is done by a skilled dermatologist.
